7 Night / 8 Days Helambu Trek~ 2022 Overview

The Helambu Trek is trekking excursion to highland villages of langtang valley of Nepal which is 71 km away in northeast region from Kathmandu city. The Helambu village is inhabited by people of Hyolmo civilization and the word Helambu is derived from their locale language. The Helambu region starts from the Laurebina La Pass and ends at Melamchi Valley. The Helambu village is known as Tarke Ghyang and Sherpa living here are descendents of Hyolmo civilization. The highlighted feature of Helambu region is the sweet apples grown in this region, antique Buddhist monasteries, Buddhist pilgrimage site etc. The Helambu valley refers to the collection of several villages inhabited by Hyolmo Sherpas settlements. The Helambu region is dominated by beautiful nature, lush landscapes, encompassing Himalayas, green forests, traditional farming lands, customary villages with traditional houses, friendly locale etc.

The Helambu Trek begins from Kathmandu city with a land vehicle drive to Sundarijal and start trekking from there to Chisopani village taking overnight rest there. The trekking trail passes through several villages of Kutumsang, Tharepati, Tarke Gyang (helambu) which are overnight resting places during the trekking. The travelers should have to take adequate rest for their good health so they can decrease the trekking hours and do some sightseeing in resting villages. The tourists after doing sightseeing at Tarke Gyang move towards the Sermathang village and the next day the travelers land on Melamchi Bazar where they do some sightseeing and take land vehicle to Kathmandu.

Day to Day Itinerary
Expand all +

This takes about one hour and then you begin an uphill walk to Chisopani.

we reckon this takes about 07 hours.
The trail continues to drop from Chisopani on a good, sometimes level trail that crosses meadows and fields. You will then descend through Pathi Bhanjyang till Gul Bhanjyang. The trail then climbs the ridge from Gul Bhanjyang to another pass at 2620m. The meadow here makes a good camping spot and is downhill to Kutumsang at 2470m, in a saddle atop the ridge. Stay overnight at lodge.

The trek continues north to the Yurin Danda ridge which affords good views of the peaks that surround you.

The trail gradually ascends through the enchanting forest enriched with beautiful rhododendron, oak and other trees. Tharepati, in fact is a great view point from where you can get a glimpse of the breathtaking snow capped mountains such as Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar, Langshisa, Jugal, Numbur and many others. From Tharepati the trail gradually descends through the pine and rhododendron forests with great views down into the Helambu valley and across to Jugal Himal and Numbur in the Solu Khumbu. Melamchi Gaon is surrounded by beautiful forests, which is mainly inhabited by Sherpa people with their distinctive culture. Stay overnight at lodge.

The early part of the trek descends until you cross the Melamchi stream. You then trek gently up to Tarkeghyang passing through Sherpa settlements. Tarkeghyang is a beautiful Sherpa village with one of the oldest and biggest monasteries. Tarkeghyang, also known as Helambu is named after the Helmu caste. The Sherpa people living here originally belonged to the Helmu caste. We bunk out overnight at a lodge.

This day the trail is quite easier across flat land with beautiful forests on the way. There is a beautiful village about half way to Shermathang. Shermathang is another charming Sherpa village where you can visit many ancient monasteries and can see the Jugal Himal. Stay overnight at lodge.

The trail gradually descends all the way to Melamchi Pul Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. On the way, you come across several old villages. This day you will be greeted by pleasant views of mountains and will get to interact with local and friendly people. Stay overnight at lodge.

You travel on a gravel and bumpy path to Lamidanda and then follow the pitched road to Kathmandu. It’s a wonderful scenic drive & this concludes our trip of the Helambu trail.

FAQs
  • . The area spans a wide elevation range – there’s a lot of up-and-down – but the highest point reached is only 2700–3200m (depending on route), so acclimatization is rarely a problem. Winter treks are particularly feasible. The peaks of Langtang Himal are often visible, but the views aren’t as close-up as in other areas.

  • Relatively few people trek here, and with so many trails to choose from, those that do tend to spread themselves out. Helambu people call themselves Sherpa, although they’re only distant cousins of the Solu-Khumbu stock. Tamangs are also numerous, while the valley bottoms are farmed mainly by caste Hindus.

  • To get deeper into the hills faster, take the Arniko Highway to Banepa or Dhulikhel, and change to one of the fairly frequent buses for Melamchi Bazaar; rough roads head up from here towards both Thimphu and Sermathang, but are frequently blocked, so transport all the way is not assured.

The walk in follows the Gosainkund trek, rising and falling from Sundarijal through the Shivapuri National Park to Chisapani, then climbing to Kutumsang and Tharepati.
